Welcome! Bienvinedos! Cinco de Mayo is a regional celebration of Mexican heritage and history. The actual date of commemoration is May 5-6, 1862, when the Mexican army defeated the French armies of Napoleon III in Puebla, Mexico. This particular holiday is celebrated more in the United States than Mexico (other than Puebla). It was first recognized in California and slowly spread across the US. US commercialization has capitalized on the celebration of Mexican food, spirits and dance and it is now a common celebration in bigger cities across the nation. Many US residents incorrectly identify this day with Mexican independence day, equivalent to July 4th in the US. Mexican Independence Day (from Spanish rule) is actually September 16th (1810).
